Notes & Reviews:

Originally written as a set of piano pieces, Mussorgsky's splendid Pictures at an Exhibition translates the artistry of the composer's friend Victor Hartmann into unforgettable music. Peter Breiner's new orchestration creates a showpiece for our times, achieving contemporary sounds through unusual instrumental combinations, and right up to a spectacular Great Gate of Kiev performed by 104 musicians. Mussorgsky's remarkable song cycles contrast encounters with death against the often uneasy world of children in The Nursery.

Gramophone Magazine, February 2014
The forces employed are vast...and, granted, there are some intriguing sounds: at the very opening, for example, the orchestra resembles nothing so much as a giant synthesiser...Elsewhere, though, I can't help feeling that too often Mussorgsky's rivetingly original inspiration has been dressed up to sound alarmingly akin to some blockbuster movie soundtrack.

MusicWeb International, 7th January 2014
Breiner here gives every movement the full modern works in terms of orchestration. This gives us a series of pictures in primary tone-colours with very little sense of light and shade...an interesting and valuable addition to the very substantial number of various versions of the work.

American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Moussorgsky wrote the Pictures for piano. Pictures is far more brilliantly and economically. The final song in the Songs and Dances of Death is 'The Field Marshall', and Breiner makes it a mini tone poem - quite good. The human voice is the one essential element.
