Notes & Reviews:

"No one knows why Purcell wrote these string fantasias, which date from 1680 and are among his earliest surviving works. The are densely contrapuntal and heavily chromatic...The are somber, dark and rich in texture, here and there showing hints of caprice, but remaining for the most part meditative...The Rose Consort of Viols brings a smooth, mellow, dark tone to these works; it suits them, for a brighter sound would be wrong for this music..." -Crawford, ARG
