In the last decades, numerous composers set out to reconstruct Bach's St Mark Passion, a work known to have been performed by Bach since its libretto survives - the music, however, is lost. In 1995, musicologist Simon Heighes created a convincing version of the St Mark Passion by making reference to an oratorio by Reinhard Keiser (1674-1739) which appears to have been used as a model by Bach, and by setting the texts to other extant cantata movements used by the great cantor at St Thomas.Notes & Reviews:
