Notes & Reviews:

Five years on from his debut recording with Signum Records, James Rhodes has firmly established himself in the classical world as pioneering figure - reaching out through concerts, recordings and television documentaries to create new classical music fans while remaining unabashedly dedicated to the core repertoire that he performs. In his fifth recital album, he returns with a sumptuous program of works of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin, the Gluck - Sgambatti 'Orfeo Melody', and Liszt's arrangement of Robert Schumann's 'Frühlingsnacht'.

Reviews

Number 5
There is no refuting the keyboard prowess of Mr. Rhodes. He clearly is in possession of a considerable technique. His rhythmic agility and evocation of color are his greatest assets. The ease with which Mr. Rhodes is able to deconstruct complex contrapuntal passages is impressive. By the same token his occasional fastidiousness in matters of phrasing and rubato will strike some listeners as self-indulgent or perhaps inspired, depending on your perspective. This is particularly evident in the Bach and Beethoven selections. The 2 Chopin pieces come off the most convincing in terms of conception and execution. The inclusion of 2 lovely transcriptions tops off a fascinating recital which on balance is worthwhile. The recorded sound, helmed by veteran Mike Hatch, is simultaneously warm, rich and detailed.
