Notes & Reviews:

This new compilation from Sony of some of Wynton Marsalis' finest classical recordings is for anyone who is not yet convinced that he may well be the world's finest trumpeter, in classical repertoire or jazz.

Notes & Reviews:

Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Kathleen Battle (soprano); Cho-Liang Lin (violin); William Bennett (flute); Neal Black (oboe); Judith Lynn Stillman (piano); Ian On Awi Watson (harpsichord); Anthony Newman (organ).

Recording information: 1984-1998.

You've got to love a guy who can swing with the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach? Yes, Bach. This collection features the sterling trumpet playing of Wynton Marsalis in works by Classical composers, spanning nearly three centuries.

Marsalis shows off his amazing technique in everything he plays but really shines in music of the Baroque. He effortlessly fires off the fiendishly high trumpet part from Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No.2," seemingly without coming up for air. More Baroque fireworks are launched skywards as Marsalis is joined by soprano Kathleen Battle in the aria "Let the Bright Seraphim" from George Frideric Handel's 'Samson.'

It is not all Baroque pyrotechnics however. Marsalis is also able to muster tenderness and grace in a moving rendition of the famous Irish tune, " 'Tis The Last Rose of Summer." The collection is rounded out with music by 20th-Century composers Leonard Bernstein, Henri Tomasi and a memorable performance of "The Prayer of St. Gregory" by Alan Hovhaness.
