Notes & Reviews:
This "symphonic-cantata" was written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of printing by Johannes Gutenberg. While Mendelssohn was particularly interested in Guttenberg as the printer of Luther's translation of the Bible, the composer also seems to have been influenced by the part played by music in the Lutheran tradition.
