Written for the German Opera Company, set up by Joseph II, National-Singspiel, Mozart created one of the more interesting manifestations of the current penchant for Turkish themes. From the grand Italianate arias to the servant's folksongs, the Turkish Marching music, quasi-middle eastern modulations, ceremonial episodes and grand choruses, Mozart treats us to his typically exquisite melodies and creates a beguiling oriental atmosphere. Recorded at the Teatro Della Pergola, Florence, Italy in 2002, Zubin Mehta conducts this outstanding cast.
