Remarks:
'Il Crociato in Egitto' was Meyerbeer's last and greatest Italian success and it was the opera that made his name on the international scene. Meyerbeer is known to have been one of the most celebrated composers in his own lifetime but also one of the most contested after his death. Meyerbeer was one of the last great composers to use the voice of a castrato for the part of the "primo amoroso." Like almost all Meyerbeer's operas, 'Il Crociato' makes great demands of its performers in vocal terms: the vocal style is Italian, richly embellished in parts certainly Rossinian, but there is no lack of personal choices that offer a glimpse of the development of the decidedly romantic vocal models to come.Notes:
