Remarks:
"Herbert von Karajan had special relationship with the music of Bruckner, and in particular the three masterpieces heard on this 2-DVD set. Karajan conducted the Eighth Symphony at many important points throughout his illustrious career, culminating with this 1979 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic. The tension (he) creates is almost palpable throughout the performance, but the most penetrating moments in the symphony -- and indeed on the entire two-disc set -- come in the third movement Adagio... Karajan's direction of the Ninth and Te Deum... replaces the angst of the Eighth with the savage brutality contained in the Ninth." -All Music GuideNotes:
