Notes & Reviews:
Maria Ewing, as Dido, heads an outstanding cast of young British singers in a film of Henry Purcell's much-loved tragic opera. With spectacular sets this intense tale of heroism, passion, betrayal and ultimate tragedy is played out against a backdrop of fiery rituals, evil spells and pageantry.
"This performance of Dido and Aeneas, directed for television by Peter Maniura, designed by Niek Kortekaas, and filmed at the house and grounds of the eighteenth century English estate, Hampton Court, is a gorgeous realization of Purcell's masterpiece. Lit entirely by natural light and fire, Hampton Court House and gardens have a sense of mystery and of archaic, even primitive, splendor... Richard Hickox's reading of the score with the period instrument ensemble, Collegium Musicum 90, is unobtrusive, even somewhat plain, but in this production, that's a virtue; an elaborately ornamented performance would have seemed mannered and out of place in the brawny physicality of the world that Maniura and Kortekaas have created. The sound is clear and wonderfully natural; the recording captures the performers singing in the actual settings, not lip-syncing to a prerecorded version, and the effect is disarmingly direct and intimate... Highly recommended." -All Music Guide
