Notes & Reviews:

On this delightful DVD, Rossini's hilarious romp 'L’Italiana in Algeri' (1813) gets a colorful staging by the Italian actor/director Toni Servillo. For this tale of a gutsy Italian girl who outwits a lust-driven Pasha, a lively cast is headlined by Dutch mezzo Christianne Stotijn in the title role of Isabella and the dynamic Russian tenor Maxim Mironov in the highflying coloratura role of Lindoro. Acclaimed Italian bass-baritone Marco Vinco is the lustful Pasha Mustafa. In this crowd pleaser from the 2006 Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Arnold Schonberg Choir, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and soloists are led by Rossini specialist Riccardo Frizza with sparkle and brio.
