Anita O'Day: Anita O'Day Live in 1963 &1970 [DVD]

Track List

Album Remarks & Appraisals:

This DVD boasts two wonderful concerts from 1963 and 1970 that present the "jazz singer supreme" in impeccable form. O'Day's horn-based approach to singing is in full effect throughout both shows including stand-out renditions in each show of audience favorites "Tea for Two" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" (both reprised from her triumphant appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival). This DVD is a fitting testimony to one of jazz music's true originals and shows unequivocally why she is ranked in the top tier of vocalists along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.

"The video confirms that despite a somewhat brusque stage manner, O’Day held her audiences in the palm of her hand with eye contact and rare but charming smiles. In fact, when she smiled, you felt special because she didn’t do it in every number. At the end of the Olso set, given in a huge auditorium rather than a small jazz club, Anita follows the last drumbeat with one word: "Bye!" And off she goes into the wings. Even the cameraman couldn’t believe it. He follows her every step of the way, even she is swallowed up by darkness, probably expecting her to come bouncing back for a happy smiley encore. But you don’t get it, man, that’s all she wrote. The performance is over and she’s gone, real gone. Bye!"-Fanfare
