Notes & Reviews:

Pierre Boulez has already left an indelible imprint on the international music scene, not only as a composer and conductor but also as a music philosopher and teacher. This documentary, a homage on the occasion of his 85th birthday, shows his invaluable nurturing of young musicians as they come together during the summer for intensive rehearsal weeks. Adopting the perspective both of Pierre Boulez and of the students, the film conveys an infectious enthusiasm for contemporary music, a determination on the part of everybody to do it justice, and a wonderful insight into the legacy that Pierre Boulez passes on to the next generation.

"The Boulez enigma is richly displayed throughout this fascinating and deeply satisfying disc, which mixes documentary material from masterclasses, rehearsals and social events with extracts from concert performances by the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, complete with Boulez's spoken introductions.

Lucerne in summer is an idyllically beautiful location, even if it risks being wasted on a collection of highly motivated, supremely gifted young musicians seeking above all to benefit from the kind of top-class, intensive instruction in the craft of orchestral playing and conducting, as well as composition, that's on offer from the Lucerne Festival Academy. One would have to be even more cynical than is usually true of seasoned music critics not to be touched by the way the veteran maestro goes out of his way not just to socialise with the students on boats and mountain railways, but to ensure that they receive just the right level of professional guidance and encouragement. To see Boulez working on The Rite of Spring with young conductors, always hands on but never dogmatically overbearing, will give the lie to anyone who assumes that his approach to interpreting modern music has always been that of a mechanistic dictator, inflexibly precise but emotionally repressed, rather than as an open-minded and good-humoured advocate for the music he values most.

And that, it's worth remembering, includes his own compositions. In particular, the extracts from Répons, one of his major demonstrations of how to bring electronic and acoustic music constructively together, are bound to raise one crucial question in some minds. How can Boulez, in his mid-80s, justify spending so much of his precious time in helping young musicians when his most devoted admirers continue to hope for more new music from him? You won't find the answer to that question on this disc, but its unspoken presence brings an extra level of memorability to a uniquely revealing portrait of a remarkable - and remarkably enigmatic - composer-conductor." - Gramophone Awards, 2010 / DVD Documentary nominee
