Notes & Reviews:
These four films from across two continents capture every aspect of Daniel Barenboim's immense musicality, from pianist to conductor to orchestra-founder and champion of peace. From his period as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra comes a thrilling concert of French and Spanish music given in Cologne in 2000, while a virtuoso all-Liszt piano recital at La Scala, Milan in 2007 is appropriately Italian-themed. A visit to Barenboim's native Buenos Aires brings a tribute to the masters of the tango, while the pioneering West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is seen performing among the colonnades of the Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra.
"From the mysterious opening of Leonore No. 3, through the succession of trumpet calls, to the exultant finale, this performance unfolds with taught excitement, embellished by stunning playing by the wind band... Witnessing a group of young Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese, and Jordanian musicians sharing music stands with their colleagues from Israel, under the baton of an Israeli citizen, is powerful stuff. But what is also powerful, and mightily so, is their playing. I am convinced that, if I hadn't known the conductor or ensemble responsible for these performances, the commitment, passion, and sheer polish of their music-making would be obvious and quite remarkable. Very highly recommended." -Fanfare (On The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Concert)
