Notes & Reviews:

For the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frédéric Chopin, the renowned Ruhr Piano Festival in Essen invited the Staatskapelle Berlin to give a truly special program: the rare combination of Chopin's two piano concertos into one concert. For this purpose Daniel Barenboim, the orchestra's principal conductor, assumed the role of piano soloist and handed over the reins of his ensemble to up-and-coming young conductor, Andris Nelsons.

Fanfare
Andris Nelsons does a superb job of holding the concertos together, and both the sound engineering and the camera work are excellent... The Haydn symphony with which he opens the concert receives a highly impressive performance... The orchestra produces a beautiful, soft string tone with vibrato... clear articulation, and carefully shaded dynamics. The trio of the second movement is phrased affectionately, while Nelsons plays with and sensitively molds the big tune in the slow movement, giving it plenty of life... The finale is exciting, with a true Sturm und Drang feel...
