Album Notes

This superb six-disc anthology brings together 11 of trumpeter Donald Byrd's earliest albums from the mid- to late '50s. Included here are such releases as 1955's Byrd Jazz, 1956's Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill, 1956's The Young Bloods with saxophonist Phil Woods, 1957's Jazz Lab with saxophonist Gigi Gryce, and others. These are swinging, exuberant albums that find Byrd in his formative years just before he signed with Blue Note. ~ Matt Collar
