Notes & Reviews:
The Mikado is perhaps the most widely-loved and hilarious of Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Operas. With a fabulous cast astutely directed by Stuart Maunder, this comic operetta sparkles from beginning to end. Mitchell Butel's Ko-Ko is priceless, and his singing superb. Kanen Breen portrays Nanki-Poo as delightfully happy and positive, even when about to lose his head, while Jacqueline Dark brings compelling depth to the wicked Katisha. Taryn Fiebig is the lovely Yum-Yum, and Warwick Fyfe the ludicrous, overworked and severe Pooh-Bah. The music is pure joy, with an amazing performance drawn from Orchestra Victoria by the superb conductor Brian Castles-Onion.
"Opera Australia’s lavish production of The Mikado succeeds in doing justice to the colourful whimsy and pointed fakery of Gilbert & Sullivan’s classicMitchell Butel’s Ko-Ko is nerdy, brashbut ultimately loveable and manages to carry the show with the help of Kanen Breen’s old-boy charm as Nanky-Poo. Butel’s physical performance and vocal style recall his leading role as Princeton in Avenue QTaryn Febig’s Yum-Yum is sweet but never steals the sceneWarwick Fyfe gives a plump, brooding and understated performance as befits the Lord High Everything Else, while Jacqueline Dark’s jilted lover Katisha switches disconcertingly from demonic to diva in a way that is most entertaining. Richard Alexander’s brief but memorable turn as the Mikado captures all the ersatz empathy and ruthless disinterest of the ruling class that Gilbert no doubt hoped to insinuate." -Australian Stage
