Notes & Reviews:
Described as "the great Verdian bass" (Le Figaro) and a "Mefistofele who stood out over all the others" (Der Neue Merker), Carlo Colombara brings some of the most famous bass roles to life in this wide-ranging program. Emotions range from the pride of Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen, through the terrors of Verdi's Attila, to the tender recollections of Rachmaninov's Aleko. Mephistopheles strides powerfully through both Gounod and Boito's operas, and Rossini's comic wit contrasts with the darkness of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. Carlo Colombara is among the most distinguished bass singers. He has won acclaim for his performances of romantic bel canto and French repertoire, and some of his most outstanding triumphs have been for his performances of Verdi, bringing him recognition as one of the most perfect interpreters of the latter's music. His tone is powerful, wide, dark, agile, and he has a sensitive power to communicate and this, coupled with his convincing acting skills, has brought him to a leading position in the contemporary operatic scene. In 1986 he won the prize for the best Italian singer in the G. B. Viotti Competition and the following year he won the As.Li.Co competition before making his début at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome in Ernani. His subsequent career has brought appearances in the most important theatres of the world, in Tokyo, London, Berlin, Vienna, Milan, New York, Zurich, Barcelona, where he now lives, Verona and elsewhere.
Operagasm
the moments of absolute greatness make this DVD a must-see for anyone who appreciates or wishes to learn about the bass repertoire, or the opera buff looking for great singing and great scenes.
David's Review Corner
Proving the description of Italy's most outstanding bass, the young Carlo Colombara here performs ten of the best known arias in staged presentations. ... the Song of the Toreador from Bizet's Carmen... sets the scene for a voice of ringing brilliance that is very happy in the upper end of the bass range. All tracks are staged in costume and with a varying degree of backdrop scenery, mainly derived from a church surrounding. The various orchestras and choruses give good support; the presentation is imaginative and the camera angles help to create the actuality of locations.
