Notes & Reviews:
This highly acclaimed 2011 production of Salome from Baden-Baden, staged by German director Nikolaus Lenhoff, exceeded the high expectations of the audience and critics alike. Angela Denoke is a brilliant Salome, and Kim Begley, Doris Soffel and Alan Held complete a perfect cast."As with his Elektra at last summer's Salzburg Festival, Lehnhoff's strength in this Salome is the psychological accuracy and musicality of his direction... In Baden-Baden Lehnhoff can rely on a superb ensemble led by Angela Denoke, with her stunning singing and acting... An enthralling premiere that thoroughly deserved its rapturous reception." --FAZ
BBC Music Magazine
Denoke wins her place in the sun as a lithe if hardly sex-kittenish Salome. She has an expressive, secure and slightly dark-timbred voice...Held is a physically and vocally powerful prophet...It's all clear and slick throughout but never quite makes the flesh creep.
Recorded in Baden-Baden in 2011, this Nicolas Lehnhoff-directed production draws vivid and valid characterizations and motivations.
Kim Begley's big-voiced Herod is properly nasty, Doris Soffel's aging movie-star-like Herodias is both shrill and menacing, and Alan Held's Jochanaan is filled with scorn, piety, and grandeur.
