Notes & Reviews:
One of the great pianists of the twenteith century, his international fame matching that of his Soviet countryman (and Conservatory classmate) Richter, Emil Gilels was famous for both his superb tone and stunning technical mastery of the keyboard. This new coupling, of recordings from the USSR state-owned Melodiya label, presents Chopin's `Funeral March` Piano Sonata No. 2, Schumann's Piano Sonata in F-Sharp, and Liszt's Rhapsodie Espagnole.
Now here was a great pianist if ever there was one... Such is the quality of his pianism. Highly recommendable issue. There are some smudges but of little account given the musical insights and the beauty of sound he produced. The Rhapsodie Espagnole is pretty breathtaking.
