Notes & Reviews:

From the time of her sensational Metropolitan Opera debut in 1974, Kiri Te Kanawa has been renowned for a striking stage presence and an even more remarkable voice, really two voices in one: a powerful soprano big enough for Strauss and Verdi, and a radiant lyrical element that has made her one of the most sought-after Mozart singers of her generation.

Taste in repertoire selection has always been one of Te Kanawa's strong suits, and it is amazing how well this collection of arias and popular ballads hangs together, more like a concept album than a greatest hits disc. That concept would seem to be unalloyed romantic ecstasy, expressed in the most opulent and sensuous ways, whether it be by Puccini, Korngold, or Jerome Kern. And lest that last name be cause for concern, let it be said that Dame Kiri's version of "All the Things You Are" shows her to be a great Tin Pan Alley stylist, miles beyond most of her classical colleagues.
