Notes & Reviews:

Personnel: Jean-Yves Thibaudet (piano).

For this disc of film-related music, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet looks back to the black-and-white movies of the 1940s and 50s, when piano-orchestral works used as background music became popular hits which sold countless albums and music sheets. The concertos of Sergei Rachmaninov and George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue,' with their universal appeal and timeless character, are naturals for such a collection. The same goes for the 'Warsaw Concerto,' yet this highly popular work is not a classical standard and not really a concerto at all. Written by British composer Richard Addinsell for the movie DANGEROUS MOONLIGHT, it eclipsed both film and composer in its popularity.

Thibaudet is the perfect exponent for these works, with his sparkling technique and natural flair for grand, romantic music. The Rachmaninov performances are drawn from his previously available Decca recordings with Vladimir Ashkenazy; the remainder of the program is newly recorded. Hugh Wolff's direction of the BBC Symphony Orchestra provides idiomatic backing for Thibaudet's talents. Together they provide a dose of lush nostalgia not to be missed.
