Album Summary
Performers
Paul Giger (Violin)
Marius Ungureanu (Viola)
Personnel: Paul Giger (violin).
The tonal austerity of midieval music and modern minimalism find common ground in the imagination of Swiss composer-violinist Paul Giger. While some of his works spotlight his virtuosity as a soloist with electronic applications, 'Ignis' is entirely acoustic and focuses on the interactions of a trio of strings and choir. The opening 'Organum' is a straight arrangement of an work from the Notre Dame school, while 'Tropus' and 'Alleluia' are based on monophonic melodies from the abbey of St. Galien, circa 1000 and the concluding title track is based on a hymn by the 12th century abbess Hildegard of Bingen. Perhaps the most intriguing work on the disc is 'Karma Shadub,' where Giger uses the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir much like the strings of the violin in some of his other works, to produce shimmering arpeggios which provide a grounding for his ecstatic solo lines.
