SCINTILLATING PERFORMANCES
The great pianist Eric Le Van is known as a pioneering archivist of unusual repertoire. Here he and Violinist Michaela Paetsch Neftel, first woman ever to record all of Paganini's Caprices (for Teldec), give us to savor the neglected yet great music of the once celebrated 19th-century composer, Joachim Raff. Mr. Le Van plays with all the sensuous warmth and colorful imagination these delicately-chiselled pieces exude. The Joachim Raff Society itself has endorsed this brillant and exuberant recording as "scintillating performances of these delightful miniatures... moments of ravishing beauty and tender introspection alternate with episodes of wry wit and quick excitement... a model of its kind." (Mark Thomas) Don't miss out on this gem! Critic Donald Satz further commented on Classical Net on Mr. Le Van's playing: "He hypnotizes us with notes of sparkling pearls gliding effortlessly through space... in a perfect union, a wealth of detail and expression, tremendous attacks, fantastic elastic and superb rhythmic lift. Raff couldn't ask for better champions of his music." And I can only concur with Mr. Satz when he evokes the possibility that Neftel plays here "probably better than Anne-Sophie Mutter... her singing tone is intoxicating." Only to conclude that Eric LeVan and Michaela Paestch Neftel have reached "a level of artisttry and technique that is stunning.... Using the rating system employed by [...], I give the recording a 10/10; the Satz Rating Scale shows the disc to be off the charts."
