CPO is releasing one of the 19th century's most popular settings to works by Friedrich Schiller: 'The Lay of the Bell' by Max Bruch. Bruch had 'boundless admiration' for Schiller and, on completing his setting in 1878, dedicated it to the poet himself.

Hoff's opening narration is a model of vocal clarity. However in the end the solo singing honours belong to Annette Markert, the alto. However it's the combined chorus who excel themselves, which is exactly as it should be in the kind of 19th-century work, with rapt singing in the opening movement, terror during the fire, and a sense of wonder when the Bell is finally cast.
