Notes & Reviews:

1936 saw a final rush of famous musicians visit Japan before the outbreak of war: Chaliapin, Wilhelm Kempf, Emanuel Feuermann and the duo of Szymon Goldberg and Lili Krauss. Goldberg had been concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, but after the rise of the Nazis, he escaped to Italy, where he met Lili Krauss, a pupil of the famed Schnabel. They formed a concert duo but, because of the political machinations of the time, their appearances throughout Japan barely merited notice. Later, Goldberg would be detained by the Japanese military during a tour of Java and sentenced to months of hard labor. Many years later, Goldberg would be renowned for his interpretations with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and Krauss would become a preeminent Mozart soloist. Here we have them in their youth, giving sparkling performances of two major Beethoven sonatas, in vivid transfers by the wonderful Opus Kura engineers.
