Arcadia Lost - works by Britten and Vaughn Williams / Michael Dauth, violin; Mark Wigglesworth

Notes & Reviews:

Founded in 1932, the Sydney Symphony has evolved into one of the world's finest orchestras. They perform works by Vaughan Williams and Britten for this recording, which also includes On Wenlock Edge with Steve Davislim, tenor, the Hamer Quartet and Benjamin Martin, piano.

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
These two recordings are rather similar, if not exactly the same, in repertoire and execution. They are in both cases well performed and splendidly recorded. The SACD format used in the Melba is gilding the lily, a totally insubstantial gesture in recording these small groups and in this acoustically undemanding repertoire. If you are fond of this music and want authentic renderings of it, you will surely enjoy both of these, even though they break no new ground as interpretations.

Essential to Flos Campi are the hemiolas and contrapuntal rhythms that generate its flow and subtle textures. All three of the above works were recorded in concert at the Sydney Opera House. On Wenlock Edge is a studio recording with excellent engineering. Australian tenor Steve Davislim has a pleasant "English" tone, and the Australian-based Hamer String Quartet (founded 2006) plays superbly, as does pianist Benjamin Martin.
