Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
Aarre Merikanto (1893-1958) was one of the greatest ever Finnish composers. His first symphony was written in 1912, when he was 19 and the third was written towards the end of his life in 1953.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
Although 37 years separate the works, it's recognizably the same composer, but with more edge in his writing and more independent voices. Both symphonies are approachable, but in no way trivial. Woodwind players or fans will especially enjoy them, as they're full of opportunities for that choir. Performances and interpretations are excellent, with clean recorded sound. All to the good, as in this repertoire, we're not apt to be spoiled for choice.
