Notes & Reviews:

This recording is a celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer, which was originally compiled by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer in 1662.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The earliest is A Short Requiem (1915) by Sir Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941), a heartfelt response to the carnage of the Great War that would go on for another three years. The principal work on this program is the Service in D minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Vaughan Williams was one of the few composers capable of bringing off such a compositional feat. The remaining work on this program is 'The Firmament' by John Sanders (1933-2003), who was organist of Gloucester Cathedral from 1967 to 1994. The piece is a large-scale anthem commissioned by Birmingham Cathedral for the Millennium celebration.
