Taste of HoneyAlbum Remarks & Appraisals:
Superb compilation of popular '60s material by one of the biggest names in MOR. With smooth unified voices, the Johnny Mann Singers have sold millions of records in the USA and almost none of those recordings have been released on CD. A wonderful collection of famous melodic '60s hits, such as 'Up, Up & Away', 'The Girl From Ipanema', 'Call Me', 'Monday Monday', 'Windy' and 'Mrs. Robinson'. El.
Album Reviews:
Record Collector (magazine) (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's difficult to resist the Singers' delightful harmonies, the missing link between The Kings Singers and Mamas & Papas."
Album Notes
Although it has only minimal annotation, this British CD is a sufficient best-of compilation for this easy listening vocal group helmed by Johnny Mann, with 23 tracks spanning 1964-1970 (including "Up Up and Away," which reached number six in the U.K. in 1967). Sixties Mann is largely devoted to saccharine arrangements of '60s pop/rock hits with intricate vocal harmonies, including covers of classics by the Beatles, the Mamas & the Papas, and the Association. While the singing is impeccably precise, you'll have a harder time finding more sanitized versions of "To Sir with Love," "Mrs. Robinson," "Daydream," "Monday Monday," and the like. The dots of creative eccentricity are few, but the version of the Yardbirds' "A Heartful of Soul" (as it's spelled on this compilation) stands out for its strange use of ridiculous basso profundo vocal flavoring, a mannerism also found in their Four Freshmen-like take on "She Loves You." ~ Richie Unterberger
