Notes & Reviews:

These three generously filled discs were included as a 'bonus' in Hyperion's landmark forty-disc boxed set 'The Complete Songs by Franz Schubert,' released in November 2005. They are now available separately and are presented with pianist Graham Johnson's superb notes, which firmly establish the composers in the context of that flowering of musical creativity at the zenith of which later generations have placed Schubert himself.

'This enterprising, often revelatory set should intrigue and delight anyone interested in the development of the Lied' (The Gramophone)

'If 81 songs are too many to mention individually, sufficient variety exists and enough songs are receiving a first recording for this set to be indispensable for anyone interested in the genre' (International Record Review)

'Since making music with friends was Schubert's whole raison d'etre, this 3-CD box is an inspired idea ... Led by the soprano Susan Gritton, the performances are pure A-list' (The Independent)

'Graham Johnson once again demonstrates that he has few peers today in his combined function as scholar-musician' (Fanfare, USA)

'Anyone who loves lieder will find here a rich, diverse, and delightful offering. There isn't a bad song among the 81 songs by 40 composers who wrote during Schubert's lifetime, and there's a lot of fine music here by well-known and also practically unknown composers and poets. The singing is consistently excellent... Anyone interested in this genre wll find here a broad-ranging and generous collection' (American Record Guide)

Gramophone Magazine
Abetted by Johnson's lucid pianism, the singers nicely judge the scale and character of their allotted songs. Susan Gritton, her timbre, richer and more flavoursome than a decade ago, is equally admirable in the insouciant trilling of Johann Unger's Die Nachtigall and the dramatic declamation of Reichardt's Monolog der Iphigenie. Gerald Finley is a graphic story-teller in the various Erlkönig settings and a honeyed-toned seducer in Meyerbeer's Komm, while Mark Padmore makes a persuasive case for Zumsteeg's pleasantly rambling ballad Die Erwartung... This enterprising, often revelatory set should intrigue and delight anyone interested in the development of the Lied.
