Notes & Reviews:

Renowned cellist Lynn Harrell and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Music Director Gerard Schwarz play two of the great cello concertos of the Twentieth century, both written by Russian composers during the Soviet era. Prokofiev's 'Symphony-Concerto', by its very name, acknowledges the complex writing for the orchestra which cajoles, confronts and ultimately teams with the solo cellist in a contest of virtuosity. The work was written for Mstislav Rostropovich, as was the Cello Concerto No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. This release is the third in an ongoing collaboration between Avie and the internationally renowned Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
