Notes & Reviews:

Chances are if you are a film aficionado, especially for the works of the great Akira Kurosawa, you already know Hayasaka's music. Hayasaka did the score for the classic 'The Seven Samurai (1954),' which inspired the American Western remake 'The Magnificent Seven.' In fact, Hayasaka was the composer Kurosawa relied on for his earliest films. Hayasaka also taught Masaru Sato, who would also later work for Kurosawa. Sadly, Hayasaka died from tuberculosis at only 41. Here is a chance to hear some of his music for piano. These charming works, full of delicate melodies and harmonic touches, suggest the kind of music Ravel or Debussy would have written "in the Japanese style."
