Notes & Reviews:

During the first half of the nineteenth century composers in Paris (and, for that matter, in the whole of France) found it difficult to gain fame merely with instrumental music, not to mention chamber music. Georges Onslow, himself a man of means and member of the nobility, represents that rare breed that was the French instrumental composer - maybe it had something to do with his English origins. The other Frenchman who, at least in his late years, devoted himself to intimate musical performance was an Italian: Luigi Cherubini. Viol! After the string quartets on cpo, now the quintets.
