Notes & Reviews:
Ernst Pepping continues to be known today as an undisputed great in the field of Lutheran church music, and his Spandauer Chorbuch, Missa Dona nobis pacem, and Passionsbericht des Matthaeus have rightly earned him the rank of the innovator of sacred music in the twentieth century. As a symphonist and a composer of piano and chamber music, however, Pepping is hardly known at all, and so it was that cpo encountered astonished reactions of disbelief when the label announced the recording premiere of his three symphonies and piano concerto. When these works were first performed, however, they could count on support from prominent interpreters: the bold, witty, and ironic Symphony No. 1 was premiered by Karl Boehm in 1939, and the very different, melancholy romantic Symphony No. 2, by Wilhelm Furtwaengler in 1943.
