Notes & Reviews:

"Here are the "usual suspects": the Schubert Quartettsatz (Quartet 12), which works as a brilliant opening for the program, a beautiful reading of the Beethoven Cavatina from Quartet 13, Puccini's Crisantemi, Wagner's Albumblatt, Haydn's variations from the Emperor Quartet, and Wolf's Intermezzo. Then there are interesting and welcome guests that are not quite as familiar, like the Bruckner D-minor Intermezzo for string quintet and a Piazzolla tango. Two Bach Chorales start taking us into less familiar quartet territory, but the biggest treats here are the more obscure pieces. I am thrilled that this quartet chose to put the Sequentia from Choralis Constantinus by Heinrich Isaac (c. 1450-1517) on this recording. Isaac's four-part string music, originally written for viols, works perfectly for the modern string quartet. Placing a piece by Isaac between Bach and Beethoven on a recording of short pieces puts him in very appropriate company. The other surprise for me on this recording is Hindemith's Overture to the Flying Dutchman as Played at Sight by a Second-Rate Concert Orchestra at the Village Well at 7 o'clock in the Morning. It is a direct (and excellent) transcription of the Wagner overture, but it has slightly wrong notes, counting mistakes, ensemble mistakes, and parts that sound like faking. The Leipzig Quartet plays like a group of people trying as hard as they can to play well, grabbing onto familiar melodies and rhythmic patterns when they can. The fact that they play it rather "straight" makes for excellent comedy. Speaking of comedy, Charles Ives's Scherzo, with its incorporation of the song I know with the words "there's a place on Mars where the ladies smoke cigars", brings the recording to a charming end." -ARG
