Notes & Reviews:

"This is a gem - and a tribute not only to the composer but to some of today's best Mozart singers. Pride of place is given to Anna Netrebko (the subtitle is 'Anna Netrebko and Friends'); she is heard in 6 of the 13 tracks, and most of her performances are up to her reputation as one of the best (as well as most glamorous) of today's opera singers. She is heard as Susanna, her operatic debut role in St Petersburg and Salzburg, in 'Deh Vieni, non Tardar', as Elettra in her vengeance aria and in Ilia's 'Zeffiretti lusinghieri', both from Idomeneo, as Donna Anna in the duet 'Fuggi, Crudele, Fuggi' (with Christoph Strehl as Ottavio), as Zerlina in the duet 'La ci Darem la Mano' (with Thomas Quasthoff), and in the duet 'Ah, Perdona al Primo Affetto' (with Elena Garanca) from La Clemenza di Tito. All these selections, with one exception, are sung stylishly, with luscious tone, fine diction, and perceptive tonal colors. In 'La ci Darem la Mano', it's not clear who is the seducer: Netrebko and Quasthoff are both vocally irresistible. But Netrebko needs more thrust and fire than her lyric soprano can muster in Elettra's 'Vengeance' aria; this is her only misfire. Quasthoff also sings Leporello's 'Catalog Aria', a wonderfully sly performance that makes the listener smile if not laugh. On the other hand, Bryn Terfel is a super-charged, angry Count Almaviva in a rousing rendition of 'Vedro Mentr'io Sospiro', a role that to my knowledge he has not sung on stage. (He is a fine Figaro.) Rene Pape is a majestic, warmvoiced Sarastro, his low notes in 'In diesen Heil'gen Hallen' firmly in place. The plush voice of the excellent mezzo Elena Garanca enriches Sesto's 'Parto, Parto, ma tu, ben mio' and her duet with Netrebko (both from La Clemenza di Tito). Quasthoff is as charming a Papageno as I've heard in 'Der Vogelfanger bin ich ja'. Erika Miklosa's singing of the Queen of the Night's 'Der Holle Rache' is a bit mechanical, but her high Fs are secure. The last track is, appropriately, the sublime, prayer-like farewell 'Soave sia il Vento' (Cosi Fan Tutte), beautifully sung by Miah Persson, Christine Rice, and Terfel. All the selections are accompanied by orchestras, well played and lovingly conducted by Messrs Abbado, Mackerras, and Weigle. The selections from the Magic Flute have been extracted from the recent DG recording conducted by Claudio Abbado. In sum, a fine display of stylish Mozart singing. No texts but synopses of all selections." -ARG
