Notes & Reviews:

This remarkable ongoing six-disc series presents all the extant recordings of Grigory Ginzburg's live concerts. They take us back to the years 1949-1957, which were by far the most creative and fruitful of his whole and entire career. In purely quantitative terms, these recordings are few in number, though in terms of quality, they reflect not only Ginzburg's huge repertoire, but also his unparalleled and rare virtuosic technique, as well as his equally unparalleled Romantic style of performance. Finally, being recordings of live performances, they are far more "human" than those that would have been made in studios. As his own daughter, Elizaventa, has said, "Listening to those restored recordings, the specific 'aura' that reigned in the hall during his performances, comes back to life in full. Despite all the technical difficulties encountered while working with these old tapes dating back to the 1950's I am overjoyed that the editors have succeeded in preserving the living sound of my father's instrument. I earnestly think that all those who participated in this endeavor, making it possible for these recordings to see the light of day."
