Notes & Reviews:

This recital program composed of operas whose pivotal characters are women. Emilia di Liverpool, Gemma di Vergy, Caterina Camera, Lucrezia Borgia and Rosmonda d`Inghilterra are all strong personalities who oppose the despotism, fate and injustice oppressing them. It thus becomes immediately clear why these works came under attack by the censors. The authorities detected the systematic rebellion against the prevailing political climate which informed the scenes presented on stage.

"Edita Gruberova was a very prolific recording artist in the 90s, and here is one such example. Nightingale, Gruberova's own label, has given this release (or re-release?) the works: supporting singers and a multilingual booklet with an excellent article on the music plus texts and translations. Now that's the way it should always be. In these scenes a diva (that's the correct word-these selections make expressive as well as musical demands not for the wimpy) is required to sing beautifully, show off technically and touch the heart in sometimes outrageous dramatic situations. These requirements are for the most part met by Gruberova on this record. There are fleeting examples of less than exemplary top notes (these performances lack anything of real in-alt freakishness) and some breathing that is strained. But my goodness, on the whole what a still-beautiful voice Gruberova had in the 90s, and how intelligently she phrases and with what skill she acts as a teacher of bel canto, the vocal period and beautiful singing. Gruberova, like the mature Sutherland did before her, has a a clear sense of what she can and cannot do, but these scenes are the loving work of an expert who can still deliver the goods. The supporting singers are a solid lot; and Maestro Boncampagni, who never had the reputation his best work entitled him to, is a model singer's conductor." -ARG
