Notes & Reviews:

"George Onslow (1784-1853) has been discussed often enough in recent years to require no real introduction to our readers. He is now regarded as a major figure in French music of the early 19th Century, particularly chamber music. It is difficult and demanding of its instrumentalists and requires a virtuoso technique. He was somewhat of a loner in a country that was devoted to the opera, for he concentrated on instrumental compositions-in quantity. He was a country nobleman who refused to spend his life in Paris, preferring the Auvergne. His nonet was written late in his life, sometime after 1846. He dedicated it to Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. (Onslow was of English birth and remained in contact with his English relatives all his life.) The Nonet is an inventive, enjoyable work. Quintet 19 is another mature Onslow work dating from 1832 when he was at his height of his creative powers. It has many wide harmonies that effectively build tension before launching into the main part of the movement, which is an almost Beethovenian allegro. II is a minuet that is more like a scherzo in its expressive character and tempo. III is a fiercely striding march, while IV is a motive movement. The CPO recording is very good, and the musicians acquit themselves very well. Good notes." -ARG
