Notes & Reviews:

"Enesco's first orchestral work is the rather diffuse, but effective, Romanian Poem. He wrote it in 1898 as a synthesis of Romanian folk music and western musical traditions. It pictures typical Romanian scenes and ends with a grand finale on the national anthem. As one becomes familiar with it, one realizes that it is a wonderfully complex piece that stands very well on its own. Vox Maris was written between 1929 and 1955, the year Enesco died. It really was complete, with only a few tempo indications and performance instructions missing. It portrays a sea storm where a sailor takes to a lifeboat, eventually drowning; and then gradually the sea again becomes calm. Only the last few pages date from 1955. It, too, is a major work lasting more than 26 minutes. It is clearly a much more complicated work than the early Romanian Poem, though it remains tonal. It also includes a tenor solo for the sailor that is distantly recorded here. The chorus is heard more effectively. Voix de la Nature was written from 1931 to 1939. It was left unfinished, with only the first movement - some 43 pages - complete. It is for a group of strings: pairs of violas, pairs of cellos, and double-bass. The result is a rather quiet, effective nine-minute piece that portrays autumn in the forest. The notes are rather brief but informative. This is certainly well worth its bargain price." -ARG
