Notes & Reviews:

"It is beyond belief that we have had to wait so long for world premiere recordings of Vaclav Jan Tomasek's (1774-1850) first two piano concertos. These are late classical works written 1803- 5. They are truly minor masterpieces, filled with vigorous, tuneful writing that becomes immediately memorable. Sometimes they sound like Mozart's late works. This is all the more amazing when one considers that he was entirely self taught! He had intended to study law when he moved to Prague in 1790 but was diverted by the music-loving Count Buquoy, who immediately hired the 16-year-old as his personal composer and family music teacher. We are told nothing about his life for the next 30+ years except that in 1824 he married one of his students. He then left the Count's service but stayed in Prague, continued teaching, and became host to touring musicians, including Berlioz, Paganini, Clara Schumann, and Wagner. Perhaps his most famous student was Hanslick, who became the famous Viennese music critic. Although he wrote widely, much of his music has been neglected. Even the concertos were largely ignored. The first was given one performance in 1806, but the second was evidently never performed in his lifetime. Supraphon and the Czech Radio have supplied first class performances and recordings. The notes are good." -ARG
