Notes & Reviews:

"This is Volume 7 of the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage series. These cantatas are for the 14th Sunday after Trinity, recorded on September 24, 2000 at Ambronay Abbey in southern France, and for the Feast of St Michael and All Angels on September 29 at the Church of Our Lady, Bremen. The gospel lesson for 14 Trinity is Luke 17:11-19, the story of the healing of the ten lepers. The cantatas for that day, dating from 1723, 1724, and 1726, are penitential, treating human sin as a disease in need of divine cure while extolling the virtue of gratitude in the person of the one leper, a Samaritan, who returned to give thanks for his cure. The St Michael cantatas are about war in heaven and the expulsion of Satan. These cantatas all include trumpets and drums in their scoring, as was the custom on that day in Leipzig. The works for 14 Trinity are more modestly scored. The performances are outstanding. Ambronay Abbey has a very lively reverberation that is sometimes overwhelming in the more fully scored movements. There is no denying the high technical standard of these performances, but sometimes Gardiner does things that rub me the wrong way. In what is probably the most familiar movement from the cantatas in this volume-the duet 'Wir Eilen' from 78-Gardiner sets a blistering tempo-and then seems to be goading the singers and players to go even faster. The singers are more than able to keep up with the pace, but the effect is unsteady, lacking the poise the music deserves. In addition, the ending is just too cute. This is the exception. On the whole, these are solid and intelligent performances that should delight the most demanding listener." -ARG
