Notes & Reviews:

"This BBC lunchtime recital effectively combines the native and foreign talents of a singer whose technique and intelligence have shone brightly on opera and concert stages (and on disc) in the last decade. If you believe those who think Isokoski a cold technician, try "Liebesode" from Berg's Seven Early Songs, where nothing of the lyric's or the song's sensual subtext is lacking. Her virtuosity we may (but never should) take for granted. Sibelius's 1904 "The dragonfly", with its frequently unaccompanied vocalises, is a chamber Luonnotar, a test of the singer's pitching and pacing, consummately accomplished here. In fact, the whole Sibelius group, anything but an easy opener for the programme, sets exacting challenges to which Isokoski rises, culminating in the mini-opera "The maiden's tryst". In the Strauss songs, a well chosen group concentrating on Strauss's marriage and fatherhood, Isokoski is realistically touching in "Meinem Kinde" and precisely focuses in on the dreamy eroticism of "Cacilie". Encores are neatly chosen - "Summertime", a favourite melody of Strauss's in later life, and Merikanto's "I am alive!", a miniature Finnish envoi. Marita Viitasalo, Isokoski's regular accompanist for nearly 20 years, mirrors her voice to perfection, although some may find her Berg overripe. The recording is amply warm but close to the point of almost excluding the hall's acoustic. This is an important souvenir of fine recital singing." -Gramophone
