Notes & Reviews:

Black Box presents a recording of two seminal works by Steve Reich, one of the most influential composers of our time, as well as a world premiere recording of a piece by his protege Marc Mellits. Reich's Different Trains, considered one of the most significant works of the past century, is based on Reich's experiences of train journeys as a child in the late 30s and early 40s in America, and his thoughts about the kind of trains he might have been on, as a Jew, had he resided in Europe during that time. The work uses pre-recorded speech samples, train sounds, and music as a backing track which is then performed over, creating a haunting musical documentary.
