Notes & Reviews:

"The Kopelman recording, which comes from a Wigmore Hall concert in January 2006, is superb in every way. The players, all graduates in the 1970s from the Moscow Conservatory, pursued separate careers until the founding of quartet in 2002. (The first violinist Mikhail Kopelman had been first violinist with the Borodin Quartet for some 20 years; Boris Kuschmir and Igor Sulyga were founding members of the Moscow Quartet, and Mikhail Milman was principal cellist with the Moscow Virtuosi.) The mechanics of intonation and ensemble are top-notch in this new group, and their sound is rich and warm. All the tempos in Death and the Maiden are slower than the Takacs, the whole piece lasting 3-1/2 minutes longer. The extra minutes allow the Kopelman time for intimacy and pathos, as well as fire and despair. This is a complete emotional journey, one to convince you (if such is needed) of the incredible depth and maturity of the 27-year-old composer. Recordings of the Tchaikovsky quartets have long been dominated by the Borodin Quartet, which made three, the last two with Kopelman. The Slavic intensity and extroverted emotion come naturally to these musicians, and the lovely melodic solos give ample opportunity for everyone to shine with gorgeous, fervent tone. The scherzo and finale are alert and fiery, while the slow movement captures the composer's dark sentiments with just the right level of sensitivity. This is, indeed, beautiful playing, warm and vivid, but not over-projected. I can't imagine anything better than this!"
