Notes & Reviews:

There are few other singers whose careers can be so completely traced in recorded documents from the very beginning as can that of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. It extends from his recordings of lieder in 1947 to his stage debut as Posa in Verdi's Don Carlos in 1948, his first Wolfram in 1949, his debut in Salzburg in 1951 and in Bayreuth in 1954, and includes all the performances and productions recorded on tape or record, all of which has created an immense discography over the years. The recording industry had already discovered Fischer-Dieskau in the days of 78's, presenting him as Marcello and Sharpless (Puccini), Fluth (Nicolai) and Ford (Verdi) as well as Tsar Peter, Kuhleborn and Eberbach (Lortzing). Fritz Busch saw in this young baritone the ideal Renato for his 1951 recording of Un ballo in maschera at the West German Radio (WDR). In 1956 Carl Ebert's influence led Fischer-Dieskau to sing the role on stage, a performance that represented his breakthrough in Italian opera. In later years he developed his talents in dramatic new ways, with performances in Busoni's Doktor Faust, Berg's Wozzeck and Hindemith's Cardillac and Mathis der Maler. It seems astonishing that the earliest chapter in Fischer-Dieskau's career has been neglected for so long. Only now, more than half a century after he made them, this CD's recordings are finally making their modern appearance.
