"Margherita Grandi, Australian by birth, Italian by musical upbringing, was something of a hit-and-miss meteor in her stuttering career, badly affected by two world wars. But when she suddenly turned up at Glyndebourne in 1938 as Lady Macbeth, she caused a minor sensation with the critics praising her magnificent voice and powerful presence. Here was a truly Italian spinto voice, fearless in attack, wide in range, daring in execution. With a strong personality to go with her vocal gifts, she proved near-ideal as the ambitious, scheming anti-heroine. She returned to the role at Glyndebourne in 1938 and once again to sing it with Glyndebourne at the first Edinburgh Festival in 1947.
