Notes & Reviews:
"This two-disc set offers a fascinating selection of artfully orchestrated viol pieces by Marin Marais, played with consummate skill by Jordi Savall and a group of other early music stars. The titles of some of the works in this 'Suite in the Foreign Style,' from Marais' fourth book of viol works, hint at the wide range of musical diversity contained therein: 'La Reveuse' (The Dreamer), 'Le Labyrinthe' (The Labyrinth), 'La Bizarre' (The Weird), 'Allemande pour le sujet et Gigue pour la basse' (Allemande for the subject with a Gigue for the bass). Too often, historically informed practices have the effect of crippling the interpretive possibilities of a work - instrumentation, dynamics, tempi, etc. - based on a handful of dogmatic assumptions. Savall's approach has the opposite effect, allowing him to fully explore the coloristic opportunities offered by the vast array of instruments, timbres, and playing techniques of the French Baroque. Marais, in fact, fully intended for the suite to be orchestrated however the performers deemed fit, as stated in the original advertisement for the Fourth Book. The result, under Savall's command, is often spectacular: The thumping field drums that open the first piece, Marche Tartare, herald the arrival of some truly unique music, while the Feste Champetre has all the boisterousness, vivacity, and good humor of a rural harvest festival. In short, this is a fascinating selection of unfamiliar and often complex music, virtuosically played according to Savall's wonderfully artistic understanding of all things Baroque. Alia Vox's artful packaging includes an extensive booklet, photographs of the recording session, portraits of the composer, several facsimile selections from the original score, and the text for Marais' original advertisement." -H&B
