Notes & Reviews:
This significant series devoted to the artistry of Michel Corboz gathers some of the most important choral works by one of the major French composers of the 20th century into this 2 cd set. Technically Honegger was Swiss, but his major activities centered on France, where he was a member of the famed group of composers known as Les Six along with Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc and Germaine Tailleferre. King David, based on the biblical legends, was one of Honegger 's first major works, revealing his exceptional skill at writing for massed forces. Indeed, the original version of 1921 used only a relatively small instrumental group competing with the vocal soloists, but the full orchestral revision is used in this performance. Based on a text by Paul Claudel, the short oratorio The Dance of Death was inspired by the author 's visits to Basle 's museums and the deep impact of the sinister depictions of death he saw, especially the collection by Hans Holbein the Younger. The work is full of dark contrasts. On the other hand, the Easter and Christmas Cantatas reveal a much more reverent, simplistic side of Honegger, with their delicate, neo-classical touches. This is precisely the kind of music Michel Corboz and his soloists and ensembles excel at.
"Le roi David remains the best known of Honegger's oratorios, Jeanne d'Arc notwithstanding, and is the best of them: taut, fast-moving, exhilarating in performance. ...La danse des morts... is vividly performed here..."-Gramophone
